Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog

Barbara and I attended a frog exhibit in Anaheim, California on Sunday, March 7, 2010. [link] The Waxy Monkey Leaf Frog Phyllomedusa sauvagii has adapted to meet the demands of life in the trees. It does not need to return to the ground during the mating season, rather it lays its eggs down the middle of a leaf before folding the leaf, sandwiching the eggs inside. Its nest is attached to a branch suspended over a stream so that hatching tadpoles drop into the water. In common with other phyllomedusines, it presents physiological and behavioural adaptations to limit water loss including impermeabilisation of the skin by lipid secretions, excretion of uric acid (uricotelism) and diurnal torpor.[6] Lipid secretions are produced in a special type of cutaneous gland and are spread over the surface of the skin by the legs in a complex sequence of wiping movements.

When I was growing up, thousands of frogs used to roam around my house. We were close to the river. I enjoyed scaring my sister with the frogs. She thought they were ugly.

Yeah, and you just don't see fat frogs that often. At least I haven't seen one before. It makes him a little more awesome:P

For some reason or another, I'd say that a tiny golden crown perched upon this frog's head would be a most appropriate accessory based upon how "regal" or "stately" this little guy appears.

Never thought that I'd use the terms "regal" or "stately" in describing a frog, but then again, I never expected to fathom suggesting a tiny crown to be worn by said amphibian.

Heh heh.

I'm sure somewhere in the galaxy or the universe, there is an intelligent species where royalty exists and where the amphibian wears a crown.

I agree with deviantART member "GiorgioGalactico" and his comment below ... first thing that I thought of was "If ever there were a representation in Nature for a doppelgänger of the fictitious Star Wars galaxy gangster entity known as 'Jabba the Hutt', then THIS frog is indeed it."

:D

Yes, very much a Jabba-esque creature.

;)

Great shot Mr. Serrano.

Uhm ...

Are you about to get devoured in this photo? And if so, should I place a call out to all Jedi Knights within the immediate vicinity to come to you (and the lassies') aid?

But alas, it DOES look like Jabba the Hutt ... sorta ... the entrance to the cave reminds me of its mouth.

:iconthxfav1::iconthxfav2::iconthxfav3::iconthxfav4: on Pasadena Wet Lights. Some people do not like to wake up early in the morning, but I do. I like the early morning because the thoughts of people are resting and not passing through my head. It allows my mind to be totally peaceful without struggling to filter out the thoughts of too many other people. It's the perfect time to see the beauty in everything. I am very happy you love the reflections on the streets after the rain has cleaned the city. [link]
