I was very fortunate on the day I visited the gardens, Tuesday, February 25, 2008. During my entire walk, which took an hour, not another human being crossed my path nor interfered with any of my photos. These blossoms were remarkably free of bees. I'm reading this amazing book by Will Ferguson entitled "Hokkaido Highway Blues: Hitchhiking Japan".
Although quite hilarious it also gives lots of info and insights on Japan, its culture and people.
I believe you'd enjoy it.
